Carnival Jubilee Joins Search After Regal Princess Crew Member Goes Overboard
A somber morning off Cancun, and a reminder that at sea, the whole fleet answers the call.
We usually open the Ship's Log with something we can poke fun at. Not today. Early Monday morning, a crew member went overboard from the Regal Princess as she sailed off Mexico's Caribbean coast near Cancun. Princess Cruises has since confirmed the crew member did not survive, and has not released their identity.
Here is the part every cruiser should sit with for a second. The response was immediate and it was collective. The ship began searching at once. Mexican maritime authorities joined the effort at 7:30 a.m. And at 9:35 a.m., another ship arrived to help comb the water: the Carnival Jubilee.
If you listen to this show, you know the Jubilee is basically our heartbeat. Hearing that she diverted her own morning to help look for a stranger in trouble is exactly the kind of thing that gets left out of the brochure. At 1:30 p.m., the Regal Princess captain announced the crew member had died. Princess said, "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the crew's family and friends during this difficult time," and confirmed grief support is being offered to guests and crew.
The voyage continued. The seven-night sailing is still expected back in Fort Lauderdale on July 18, with Princess revising the itinerary to call at Cozumel on July 16 in place of the missed stop.
There is no bit here. Just a note that the people who work these ships are family to each other across brand lines, and when one of them is in the water, the nearest ship turns around. Our thoughts are with the Regal Princess and Jubilee crews.
