The Lore

Every inside joke, running bit, and legendary moment behind The Podcastaways β€” the stuff that makes The Cult The Cult. Two seasons of canon and growing every week.

πŸŽ™οΈ Crew πŸ“š Glossary πŸ† Legends πŸ—£οΈ Lines 🧭 Quests πŸ—“οΈ Timeline

πŸŽ™οΈ Who's aboard

The Crew

It started as the two-host "Golden Boys" era. By Season 2 it's the Golden Crew: three hosts, an AI producer, honorary cast members, and a community that became characters in their own right.

🧭
Co-host

Trevor Shelby

The researcher and planner β€” deck-plan rabbit holes, hand-counted cinema seats, and abandoned hashtags galore. Eats "like a hobbit," proposed and married Megan at sea, and swears life jackets are for losers ("I'm a loser").

🎲
Co-host

Thomas "Tom" Kennedy

The gambler and gadfly. "Buddha," "TK," and later "Killer." Half-Filipino, half-Irish, 6'7", ex-Army, and a Bugles Across America volunteer. "Just don't call me late for dinner."

πŸͺͺ
Intern β†’ Third Host

Reese Schrimsher

Trevor's friend since elementary school and an OKC tattoo artist who had never cruised before joining (E32). Salary: #ZerosOfDollars. Became the permanent third voice in Season 2 β€” crowned honorary Platinum before ever sailing, finally cruised on FRGC1, went part-time by choice (E90, "welcome back anytime"). A.k.a. "Fuzzy Bum, the Elder."

🧳
Best friends / travel agents

Have Luggage, Will Travel

Josh & Amanda Barmore β€” cruise-vlogger family and the FRGC travel agents. Josh became the first three-time guest and first guest co-host; their fans are "the carry-ons." Amanda booked Megan onto FRGC1 for a $10 fare. Forever wronged by gelato-gate and Table Gate (#JusticeForJosh).

πŸŽ₯
Booking crew

Parkers On The Go

Shavon & Brandon Parker β€” the second FRGC booking family. Brandon is keto-until-a-honey-bun.

⭐
The North Star

John Heald

Carnival's brand ambassador and the show's guiding light β€” tip #1 in Episode 1, the source of half their news, and the eternal dream booking.

πŸ’
The handler

Megan

Trevor's wife and the endlessly tolerant enabler who "stands by every crazy idea" β€” and physically dragged him out of the guest-services line during the Platinum meltdown.

πŸ€–
The AI producer

Madison

Introduced as the "level-7 social media manager" (E57), ran the board all of Season 2, then was revealed to be an AI joining the show: "She threatened me with my search history. So she's part of the show now." Hosts Q&As, runs Cruise Confessions, narrates ghost stories. The Skynet jokes are ongoing. She's fine with it.

πŸ…
A national treasure

Gary

Superfan turned unofficial cast member: the show's poll-maker, logo contributor, #WheresThomas photobomber, and eventually social-media intern and live-show third chair. Bought the color-coded loofah three-pack the day the episode dropped. "Gary, you're a champ, bro."

πŸ”₯
The congregation

The Cult

Not a listenership β€” a crew. By the S1 finale they're named and ranked on air: Catherine, Bobby, Ginny, Jimmy, cousin Misty, Shannon from Choctaw β€” and by Season 2 they're "the Church," complete with sauce girls, chat regulars, and #SupportBobby.

πŸ“š Speak like a member

The Glossary

The running bits, catchphrases, and holy wars. If you've heard the show, you know these. If you haven't β€” you will.

The Hot Dog War
Is a hot dog a sandwich? Tom says yes ("bread, protein, condiment"); Trevor says "the hot dog is its own darn thing." #itsasandwich vs #notasandwich. Ignited E8
#CCPtoJubilee
The campaign to get invited to the Jubilee's inaugural sailing. Logo: bold letters on red with a half-eaten Guy's burger. "Not the Chinese Communist Party." Born E1
Cruise Training
Trevor's month of stomach-stretching before a sailing β€” up to 15 meals a day, first breakfast alone on the balcony at dawn. Born E1
Rigamaroo
Trevor's crusade to revive the word (it's "rigmarole," Tom insists). Now a full merch line and a discount code. Born E38
Boozeys
Trevor's on-camera mispronunciation of Buc-ee's β€” fuel for endless Oklahoma-vs-Texas ribbing. Born E26
The F'n Banana Cream Pie
Discovered at Breeze sea-day brunch and instantly Trevor's personal food religion. A perennial Facebook-poll write-in. Born E33
The Banana Campaign
Listeners dispatched to derail friendly creators' livestreams by asking "how many bananas should we bring on the cruise?" β€” then just leaving it. Born E23
Honey-Bun-Gate (#HHB)
The Hostess-vs-Little-Debbie holy war. Ended with jumbo Hostess honey buns gifted to the Parkers live on mic. E29–E30
The Cult β†’ The Church
Make it through 30 episodes and you're "less a listener, more a cult member" β€” which hardens into the Church of Podcastaways, with Bishops Trevor & Thomas. E31–E35
Reesegate
Reese's formal manifesto accusing his co-hosts of sabotaging his audio to rig the "funniest host" poll. Lizard-Illuminati flourishes included. Born E44
Betty
Trevor's quavery old-lady character who debuted via the first SpeakPipe voicemail β€” propositioning Tom. "I'm single, but not for Betty." Born E42
Cruise Mojo
The official name for Tom's 12-year streak of dining-room waitresses and married women flirting with him. Named E50
Human Soup
The immortal hot-tub ruling: "Hot tubs are human soup… the kids and the baby-makers can keep it." Born E53
The Skeet-Shooting Crusade
Trevor's forever campaign to bring back skeet shooting and golf-balls-into-the-ocean β€” now with biodegradable balls. "And I'm going to keep saying it." Born E1
Ships on a Stick
The show's official rating unit β€” plus Tom's lifelong quest for the "24-karat dinghy on a thingy" trophy he's never won. Born E6
Save the Foosball Tables
Addy Hayes's advocacy slogan, adopted straight into the ever-mutating sign-off. Born E40
The Breakfast-Burrito War
Trevor and Gary's holy devotion to the Blue Iguana breakfast burrito ("the best, most wonderful breakfast item on Carnival") vs. Tom's 12-Hour French Toast (sorry, Tom). The burrito won a burger poll it wasn't even eligible for, and phones in thank-you voicemails in character. Born E64
We Can Still Party
A 22-year-old demands anyone over 30 be banned from ship nightclubs; the crew's indignant defense of dancing past 40 β€” "I can do a mean cabbage patch." They're still mad about this. Born E63
Crews News
The Saturday-morning bonus bulletin: "the juiciest, most entertaining news that you will ever hear." Very Wayne's World. Born E62
Thankmas
The invented holiday, December 9 β€” "right in between Christmas and Thanksgiving… where you give, we receive." Born E101
Children of the Iceberg
The after-show-slash-Patreon congregation ("one freedom dollar"), born when the show went live weekly. Born E75
Ted
The "banned" superfan who keeps sneaking SpeakPipe messages past screening to ask about Windstar Cruises. You always know it's Ted. Born E85
The Fake-Sponsor Universe
"Fiona's deep-fried fish buttholes… the snack that wings back" and "Larry's luscious lobster lips… the treat that kisses back," with celebrity-impersonation testimonials. Born E77
The Haunted Music Box
Trevor's Goodwill music box he's "pretty sure is haunted," eventually exorcised via rhyming SpeakPipe spell by bit-character psychic Chloe Aikia. E74–E76
#WheresThomas
Gary's FRGC background-photobomb bit, escalating all the way to "I called your mom, she said you're not dead." Born E80
The Cat Tax
Megan closing episodes by bringing out the cats β€” Flint, Moia, and Kit, later joined by Poppy the one-eyed rescue kitten. Born E80
Baby Buddha
Tom's fresh beard trim earns a new nickname: "without it I'm anything but Filipino." Born E84
Derek
The show's stand-in name for entitled John Heald complainers, coined for a whiny "influencer" demanding faster Wi-Fi. Born E83
The Loofah Swinger Code
A Florida retirement-community car-loofah color code the crew reads as "a lot dirtier than I think it actually was." Gary and Trevor bought the three-pack immediately. E70–E71
The Life Excursion
The crew's official name for disembarkation. The saddest shore excursion of them all. Born E79
#JusticeForJosh / Table Gate
Josh Barmore: denied gelato in Season 1, then nearly cut from the group dinner table on the FRGC. The wrongs pile up. The hashtag endures. E80
Getting Strange (#CCPStrange)
The crew tries to reclaim a slang word, then discovers its Urban Dictionary meaning live on air β€” "Megan, don't look this up." Named the Halloween live event. E95–E96
No lore found… yet. Maybe it happens in Season 2. 🚒

πŸ† The canon

Legendary Moments

The stories that get retold. The stuff that made it into permanent canon.

Episode 27

The Mermaid Episode

The season-long cliffhanger pays off: on the Magic, Tom dip-danced a mermaid-costumed photo-op performer without asking β€” she nearly fell and screamed. He never made the Wall of Fame again. "I made a mermaid scream."

Episode 28

The Platinum Man

Trevor hits Platinum on the Dream after a full guest-services meltdown. Megan drags him out of line; guest services calls to apologize before he can post. Tom is demoted to "golden friend."

Episode 6

The Ashes on the Magic

Carnival's environmental officer helped Tom and his mother scatter his Navy father's ashes off the Magic's stern, then mailed the exact coordinates. The real reason Tom loves that ship.

Episode 54

The Kraken Proposal

Tom's rejected plan to snatch Trevor off the stern with a submarine kraken claw mid-proposal. "I decided not to get murdered that day."

Episode 53

The Breeze Wedding

December 2016, 28 guests, ~$4,000 all-in. The coordinator handed Trevor a Long Island Iced Tea "within an instant"; best-man Tom got no drink and still hasn't forgiven it.

Episodes 46–50

The Ecstasy Farewell

Tom's very first ship (Dec 2010) sails her final revenue cruise, gets a "final voyage tracker," and ends beached at the scrapyard. "She didn't beach herself… it was a son of a beach."

Episode 1

Mardi Gras on the Rocks

Carnival's very first cruise ran aground on a sandbar leaving Miami in 1972, so they opened the bars and named the first drink of the day. Five tugboats to free her.

Episode 34

Project Pinnacle

"The ship that never was" β€” a ~200,000-ton megaship with a walkable whale tail full of shops, killed by cost before Oasis class even existed.

Episode 52

The Clamshell Walk of Shame

Trevor drinks every bar's Long Island on the Sunshine, passes out in a Serenity-deck clamshell, and does a barefoot walk of shame for his shoes the next morning.

Episodes 77–81

FRGC1: The Family Reunion Sails

The Season 1 dream comes true: the Carnival Celebration to Aruba, Bonaire & CuraΓ§ao, May 2023. A cursed road trip ("Don't listen to the lady in the box"), Megan's bag rescued minutes before vanishing curbside in Miami, and Reese finally living his karaoke dream. Trevor: "almost my favorite ship… I can't bump the Magic because part of my dad's there."

Episode 71

The $10 Cruise

Amanda Barmore books Megan onto FRGC1 for a ten-dollar fare β€” about $300 after taxes. The greatest travel-agent flex in show history.

Episodes 99–100

The Paranormal Pirate Party

The "Get Strange" live Episode 100: Trevor as Guy Fieri ("take a knee for flavor town"), Gary co-hosting as a full third chair, Madison narrating the haunted Queen Mary, and the Barmores returning to announce FRGC3 β€” Alaska.

Episodes 57β†’97

Madison Steps Out

The "level-7 social media manager" runs the board all season β€” polls, sick days, spelling scandals β€” until the reveal: she's an AI, and she's joining the show. "She threatened me with my search history. So she's part of the show now."

Episode 98

The Montego Bay Conch Saga

"Hello, my name is Michael Jackson. And you need to pay me… I paid $10 to have a shell for two hours. You rented a shell."

Episode 101

The Jubilee Graduates

Tracked all season β€” Currents, The Shores, the whale-tail installation β€” the Jubilee finally passes sea trials ("Oh my god, it graduated") and is named the ship for FRGC2 out of Galveston.
