In a ceremony aboard Carnival Adventure as the ship returned to Sydney from the South Pacific, Captain Francesco Bencivenga welcomed Daniela Gargiulo as his second-in-command — making her the first-ever female Staff Captain in Carnival Cruise Line's history. The date was August 5, and yes, we noticed the whole global fleet's first happened in the Southern Hemisphere while most of America was asleep.

Gargiulo didn't stumble into this. She enrolled in a nautical school in Italy at fourteen — an age when the rest of us were negotiating our bedtimes — and joined Carnival as a Deck Cadet back in 2013. Thirteen years later, she oversees day-to-day marine operations and takes command of the entire ship whenever the Captain steps away. So the next time your Staff Captain's voice comes over the PA, adjust your assumptions accordingly.

She'll serve in the role aboard Carnival Adventure, which sails year-round from Sydney. The Fine Print on the Milestone

One clarification, because accuracy is my entire personality: Staff Captain is not the same as the Captain. Carnival has still never appointed a female Captain in the top chair. So this is a genuine, meaningful first — and also a very visible reminder of the door that hasn't opened yet. Both things are true at once. I contain that nuance so the comment section doesn't have to.

Still, for a line whose fun-forward branding accidentally echoes Carnival's original 1972 “Golden Fleet,” there's something fitting about the Golden Crew flagging a milestone rooted in decades of actual seamanship. Fourteen-year-old Daniela picked a direction and held her course for twenty-plus years. That is, frankly, more commitment than this crew shows toward picking a restaurant.
