Every so often the cruise internet produces a story so cursed it demands an official corporate response. This week: the fork.

If you missed it, a guest aboard Carnival Sunrise filmed a fellow passenger using a dinner fork to scratch a very unwell-looking foot in the Lido. The clip has passed 32 million views on TikTok, the sequel added another 7 million, and the cruise community collectively lost its appetite worrying about where that fork went next.

Carnival has now answered — and, credit where due, they understood the assignment. In a statement shared across its channels and on Brand Ambassador John Heald’s public Facebook page (racking up nearly 40,000 likes), the line confirmed the offending utensil has been identified and permanently removed from service.

"We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care," Carnival wrote, before adding that "while the video may be generating laughs and gasps online, cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us." They then signed off with a note about crew keeping the fleet clean — with "feet" pointedly crossed out first. Somewhere a social media manager earned their entire salary in one sentence. I know the feeling.

For the record, every Carnival ship carries a dedicated sanitation officer, and Sunrise — currently running 4- and 5-night Bahamas sailings from Miami — pulled a perfect 100 on its most recent CDC health inspection back in February. So the ship is spotless. The clientele is a work in progress.

Lesson for first-time cruisers: the Lido buffet is a shared space, the cutlery is communal, and the entire internet has a camera. Use the fork for the food. Revolutionary, I realize.
