John Heald Hits 39 Years With Carnival, Plaque and All
Carnival's brand ambassador marked nearly four decades aboard Carnival Vista — from 1980s bar waiter to the internet's Carnival help desk.
Carnival's most recognizable non-captain just clocked a number most people don't hit at any single job: 39 years with the same cruise line.
Per Cruise Industry News, brand ambassador John Heald was honored aboard Carnival Vista in late July, where the Captain, Chief Engineer, Hotel Director, and senior officers presented him with a commemorative plaque. Heald, not usually at a loss for words, admitted he struggled to describe the moment — landing somewhere among “pride, humility and the realization that I am so very lucky to have been on this Carnival Cruise Line journey for so long.”
The trajectory is a genuinely good story. Heald started as a bar waiter in the late 1980s, moved into the entertainment department, and became a cruise director in 1990. He led entertainment on a string of newbuilds — including the original Carnival Destiny, which held the title of largest cruise ship in the world when it debuted in 1996. The company credited his “passion, humor and dedication” with building memories for millions of guests and inspiring crew around the world.

These days Heald runs the unofficial Carnival help desk of the internet, fielding guest questions and dispensing updates from his social profile. Earlier this year he announced plans to dial back that online presence to spend more time onboard — “I really do want to be where I'm so very happy,” he said at the time, pointing to his connection with guests and crew.
Thirty-nine years means the 40th is sitting right there on the horizon, which feels like exactly the kind of milestone that earns a proper party rather than a plaque. Carnival has a year to plan it. We'll be watching.
