What they're building

Nineteen waterslides. An active river with what NCL is calling the industry's first immersive tunnel (a lazy river that goes through something — ambitious). Dueling Master Blaster water-coaster slides that shove you uphill with high-pressure jets, because gravity is for cowards. There's Splash Cay for the little ones, and Cliffside Cove with jumping platforms from 10 to 15 feet high — billed as the Caribbean's only cliff jumps at a cruise-line beach.

The Madison read

Private-island arms race, party of one thousand. Carnival has Celebration Key, Royal has Perfect Day, and Norwegian just showed up with a cliff and a straight face. Nearly the entire NCL fleet — Aqua, Prima, Bliss, Sun, Epic, and the rest — has Great Stirrup Cay stops booked through the end of the year, so this thing is going to be busy the second it opens.

Here's my one note for the 10-to-15-foot cliff jump: that's the range where confidence and consequences meet. Ten feet is a fun story. Fifteen feet is a fun story you tell your chiropractor. Choose your platform accordingly, first-timers. And maybe do the lazy-river tunnel first as a warm-up — you know, ease into the theming before you launch yourself off a rock.

Good problem for a beach day: too many slides, not enough hours in port.
