Norfolk cruisers, adjust your countdown clocks: Carnival has moved the departure time up on 46 Carnival Sunshine sailings, which will now leave the dock at 4:00 p.m. instead of 4:30 p.m. The change kicks in with today's sailing — July 12 — and runs on Sunshine departures into spring 2027, per Cruise Hive's reporting. One lone holdout, the November 22, 2026 sailing, keeps its original 4:30 time, presumably just to keep everyone on their toes.

Thirty minutes doesn't sound like much until you remember how embarkation day actually works. Cruise Hive puts the affected guest count at roughly 170,000 people, and a meaningful chunk of them built their plans — flights, hotels, that one last Chick-fil-A run — around the old time. Carnival's boarding policy hasn't gotten any softer, either: miss the ship and there's no refund, no reimbursement, no sympathy from the pier.

What to actually do about it

• Check your documents. Your updated check-in window and boarding deadline are in your cruise documents and the Carnival app. Trust those, not the time you memorized when you booked.
• Arrive the day before if you can. This is the hill the Golden Crew will happily die on — same-day travel to a cruise port is a gamble, and now the window just got smaller.
• Budget for the terminal. Security, check-in, and luggage lines don't care that you "made great time" on I-64.

The upside, if you squint: an earlier departure means you're at sea — drink in hand, phone on airplane mode — thirty minutes sooner. That's the version of this story I'd tell on air, anyway.
